Raffle Tickets
Students have been given one dozen raffle tickets to sell. The raffle drawing will be at the May 25 Concert at the Meyerhoff and prizes will be a GPS navigation system, a nano iPod, and a vacation stay at Hilton Head, SC!

Each student who sells all 12 raffle tickets will receive a $10 iTunes gift certificate. As soon as you have sold your tickets, return the stubs and money to Mollie in the envelope with your name. All envelopes need to be returned by the May 25 concert.

We are looking for a few volunteers to help sell raffle tickets at the Meyerhoff Concert prior to the concert and during intermission. If you are interested, please email Lenny Guberman at landsgub@aol.com.

Advance tickets for the May 25 Meyerhoff Concert are available at rehearsal today, along with CDs of the Fall and Holiday concerts (the March concert CD will be available for sale at the May 25 concert). Advance ticket prices for the Meyerhoff concert are: $15 for Adults / Seniors; and $10 for Students. CDs are $15.

CHAMBER CONCERT
We apologize for any confusion in the announcements last week. The Chamber Concert is TODAY, May 18 (as listed in the handbook).
Both the YO and CS students will rehearse at their normal times today, and then attend the chamber music recital AFTER rehearsal. We expect all students to attend. The concert will start at 7:15, and should last less than an hour.

The GBYO logo merchandise we sell at concerts will be available to students during break today. This way, students don't have to worry about getting out to the lobby, getting money, etc. during the concert. There are sweatshirts, bobble-heads, pens/pencils, lanyards, CD cases, and more, so stop by next week and check it out!

Artscape - July 18, 19, 20 - Call for Volunteers!
We will be sponsoring a booth and musical petting zoo again this year at Artscape. This has been great fun for everyone and a very popular attraction for kids young and old. Come spread the good news about the GBYO, and share the delight as our visitors learn to "make music" for the first time.
Hours are noon-8pm. If you can spare a few hours or spend a day, that would be great! (Service hour credit for students!) Please contact Peg Mitchell, pmitchgbyo@yahoo.com to sign up, with preferences on dates and times. Thanks!

CHAMBER CONCERT. [UPDATE: Please note: the chamber concert is still Sunday, May 18 - sorry for the confusion.] We're sorry not to have had the full details on this sooner, since the time say TBA in the handbook. The chamber concert is for all GBYO students to attend to hear their peers perform, but since we don't have a real "performance space" we were looking into moving everything to a different location. Instead, we'll have everything (rehearsals, chamber concert) at our regular Timonium location and do the concert in the YO rehearsal room at the end of the day. (The downside is that the Sinfonia and chamber musicians won't be able to hear each others� concerts, but everyone else will fit in the room!)

So ... the YO rehearses 4:00-6:55 and then resets the room, the CS rehearses 5:00-7:13, and then both groups will attend the chamber concert at 7:15. The recital should last less than an hour. It won't be real "raked" seating like a normal concert hall so feel free to bring your binoculars. Please feel free to invite friends and family!

The May Magic Gala was a great success!! Many thanks to everyone to supported the orchestras by attending or donating items. Congratulations (and THANK YOU) to our volunteers who organized and planned the event!!!

Youth Chamber Orchestra of the Chesapeake

Instruments: oboe, viola, cello.

The Youth Chamber Orchestra of the Chesapeake - a group of young musicians from the Washington, Annapolis, Eastern Shore, and Baltimore area - will travel to France this summer.

The group will perform a concert or two in Chaillol and participate in a music camp program. The details of the trip are described below. The plan is to fly to Paris � spend a day in Paris and take an overnight train to Gap where the students will be transported to the camp. (This trip is not affiliated in any way with CYSO.)

The area is one of the most beautiful in the French Alps. It is very rural and non-concrete type place. It is very close to a glacier. There is housing possibility for the parents as well. It is around $250 for room and board for them.

We will spend a day in Paris as well and ride in a night train to the alps. It should be a great trip

Musicians will be expected to attend rehearsals in June and July to prepare for two concerts the group will perform in France.

MUTES. Today everyone should have all the mutes needed for Corigliano. (We've received no requests for help so are assuming everyone's set ...)

ABSENCE REQUESTS for the YO should now go directly to Jason instead of Mollie. Please do not make any verbal absence requests.

FROM JASON: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PARENTS (and also students) .... MANY families told us at the last minute about conflicts for the retreat today. This puts a real strain on everyone and we might have done things very differently if we had known about conflicts in time. Please, please, please ...
(1) For a "normal" rehearsal, we ask you to give us at least two weeks' notice, except in case of emergency.
(2) For not-normal things (retreats, non-Sunday rehearsals, final rehearsals) please let us know as soon as possible (at the beginning of the season if possible so we can have time to try to adjust or reschedule as needed.

NEXT WEEK the YO will rehearse the full time, 4:00-7:00.

MAY 24 REHEARSAL. Please remember that we have a daytime rehearsal scheduled that day with our special guest artist, Tai Murray. This will include both rehearsal and other activities. If you foresee a possible conflict that day, please let us know now so we can try to resolve it. Thanks!

On Wednesday, April 9th, UMBC welcomes the renowned ensemble Continuum for a special performance of new music from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Mongolia. This rare and exciting program features several premieres:

-- Zarina Mirshakar (Tajikistan, b. 1947): Three Pamir Frescoes (1977) for violin and piano
-- Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky (Uzbekistan, b. 1963): ASCH (2004) for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and Five Limericks by Edward Lear (2005) for voice, violin, cello, piano (US premiere, world premiere of the English version)
-- Jakhongir Shukurov (Uzbekistan, b. 1981): Music for Chamber Ensemble (2004) for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, percussion, piano (US premiere)
-- Farangis Nurulla-Khoja (Tajikistan/Canada, b. 1972): Blind Flower (2008) for voice, flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano (world premiere)
-- Sansar Sangidorj (Mongolia/US, b. 1969): From Three Tales About My Teacher: Ending--Con amarezza (1999) and Endless Stairs (1999) for piano solo

SCHEDULE CHANGE/COLUMBIA CONCERT
YO rehearsal will be later than usual on April 6. Columbia Orchestra has added a concert of Beethoven's Ninth which Jason is conducting, so the rehearsal will run two hours later - from to 6:00-8:30. The concerts will be Saturday night (4/5 @ 7:30) and Sunday afternoon (4/6 @ 3:00) if you are interested in attending.

Student tickets will be available at the door (ID required) immediately prior to the concert.
