This little lady — named “Miss Fried Chicken” after one of the two the mascots of the “Mr. Barbecue” restaurant in Winston-Salem, NC — was at the bottom of the pecking order in the chicken coop. A “pecking order” is a real thing: the others were beating up on her to the point where she would cower in a covered corner; when she tried to come out to eat or drink they would peck her head until she bled.
Enough of that. We’ve taken her out of the coop and now she free ranges all day long. Chickens don’t ordinarily like to be alone but she seems to do fine. She will, however, follow me around. She is also holding her own with Triscuit, our new puppy.
Considering she was oozing blood and missing most of her feathers, I think she looks great now that she’s an independent woman out on her own! Look out Rhoda Morgenstern!

Here’s Triscuit who is not at all cute:

Here’s a new addition to the family, purchased at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. It’s our new lamb, Truffle! (Click for bigger)

Truffle is a “Moorit,” which is not her breed, but rather a name given to sheep of this color. Her wool is chocolate brown on top, but is darker closer to her skin. She’s part Californian Variegated Mutant and part Merino.
To me, she looks like she’s wearing one of those Mexican wrestling (Lucha Libre) masks … Here’s her with the two other lambs, Sunflower and Papyrus who have gotten really big and are very fun and sweet.

And with Poppy Seed’s head …
